Join Ariela Lazar, PhD, as she caps Great Books Chicago 2020: Exploring Beauty with a special session entitled Beauty in Art. This two-and-a-half hour interactive art viewing session will take place at the Art Institute of Chicago. The event price includes admission to the museum and a box lunch that will be served at the Great Books Chicago event space before we meet at the Art Institute. (The lunch will be ordered in advance and participants will have a choice of options.)
In Western civilization, art is seen as intimately tied to beauty. This seems to be the case in both popular conceptions of art and in scholarly analyses of art. In this session, we will look at several Western works of art from different periods and locations. We will attempt to identify what concept of beauty was at work in the culture in which the artwork was produced, and we will explore how beauty is understood differently across different cultures.
Note: This session will take place in the galleries of the Art Institute of Chicago. Please make sure that you are wearing comfortable shoes and layered clothing.
