JGB Virtual Academy: Visual Art and Poetry: Exploring Creative Mediums

The Junior Great Books Virtual Academy will use visual art and poetry as a basis to offer students an opportunity to expand their critical thinking and creative skills. The courses for each level will emphasize analyzing and responding to works of art and poetry, speaking and listening, and writing and drawing. By combining interactive observation and reading activities with student-centered discussions, this program helps students develop their ideas, strengthen their creativity, and respond constructively to the ideas of their peers. In these sessions, students will be reading and discussing poems and joyfully exploring works of visual art. Expert Great Books discussion leaders will guide students to think deeply about big ideas while having fun.

Sample session for grades 6–8: Participants will connect with Pieter Bruegel’s art and William Carlos Williams’s poetry.

Shared Inquiry activities in which students engage include:

  • Activating and building background knowledge to support deeper exploration

  • Close reading and analysis of poems

  • Close observations of visual mediums

  • Sharing and comparing responses

  • Making and explaining inferences about poems

  • Responding to other students’ ideas

  • Considering how discussion changed or expanded their initial ideas about a poem

Each session is 60 minutes in length. All materials are included in the program price. The program may require students to complete some work before each session; if advance work is needed, instructors will give full instructions through email. We recommend that each student log in on their own device with enabled video, a headset or earbuds, and a microphone for the best audio connection. There are a limited number of spaces available!
