Designed for teachers, this advanced-level asynchronous course will help you teach students how to pose better questions, identify different kinds of questions, and focus on the questions that will best help them build their understanding of the selection after a first reading. You will learn how to stimulate students' initial curiosity about a specific text and help them learn to zero in on parts of the selection that may raise questions. You will also learn how to help students identify the types of questions they have formulated and how to best answer their questions. This course focuses on the sharing questions activity, but the strategies you will learn will help students develop a process that enables them to have the confidence to ask their own questions about any text they may encounter.

We strongly recommend that you complete the Shared Inquiry Essentials course before taking this course. This course assumes an understanding of the basic concepts of the Shared Inquiry method.

After this course you will be able to:

Help students express their initial reactions to a text in the form of questions
Use modeling and other strategies to help students articulate authentic questions
Teach students how to recognize different kinds of questions
Use follow up questions to enable students to to address their own questions
Use the power of students' questions to engage the class in exploring answers and sharing their ideas

Participants are encouraged to contribute to the discussion forums and take part in the Shared Inquiry Community. Those who complete the asynchronous modules, required coursework, and course evaluation will receive the Student Questions Specialist Badge.
