Great Books programs and the evolving science of reading share the understanding that listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking are interconnected skills that build on each other.

Junior Great Books® programs combine high-quality classroom materials and the Shared Inquiry™ method to develop student competencies that directly align with best practices according to the science of reading.

This science of reading focused 30-minute briefing will show you how participating in Junior Great Books and using the Shared Inquiry method of learning addresses essential components from the science of reading for enabling all students to become engaged, proficient readers.

In Junior Great Books, students have authentic opportunities to:

  • Improve reading comprehension and critical thinking through deliberate, systematic practice in reading for meaning
    • Infer and analyze text, as well as support claims about meaning by answering open-ended interpretive questions
    • Build knowledge and vocabulary from a variety of complex texts
    • Engage in robust conversations to develop academic language
  • Practice fluency, speed, and expression to convey meaning of text through repeated readings
  • Consider multiple meaning of rich vocabulary
  • Monitor their own comprehension by asking a variety of questions about texts
  • Engage in prereading activities, writing, and asking questions to build background knowledge

Additionally, our program deepens students’ critical thinking skills, promotes student-driven learning, and increases engagement for students and teachers. Junior Great Books materials and the Shared Inquiry method demonstrates that reading comprehension skills can be effectively and intentionally met in a shared experience.

We will also furnish you with sample lesson plans for your grade level tailored to your needs, so you will have the opportunity to examine our selections.
